Chapter Eighteen
Casey Dennis
Bobbie tried to get Noel to stay, but he ignored her pleas and walked out of the room. As soon as Ollie cut the feed, the others rushed into the conference room, everyone talking at once.
“The bastard is playing with us,” I fumed.
“My mother was not a slut,” Kandyce complained.
“What plan?” Jordy asked.
Bobbie threw up her hands. “Everyone, just shut up, dammit. I need a minute to think,” she demanded, trying to pace the room but there were too many of us in there. After a moment, she pulled out her cell phone and tapped in a number. “This is Special Agent Bobbie Vandyke. I need a suicide watch on detainee Noel Collins until further notice. Yes. Thank you.”
“You think that’s his plan?” I asked as soon as she ended the call.
“No, I don’t, but I’m not taking any chances. He believes that he won’t go to prison, and I don’t think it’s because of that overpriced lawyer, either.”
“He’s confessed, so that’s a matter of record,” I added. I seemed to be stuck on the fact that he confessed, as if that was the answer to everything, game over. Obviously, it wasn’t.
“He’s going to try to escape,” Bobbie inserted.
“Maybe you should let him,” I suggested.
Celine gasped. “Let a serial killer escape?”
Nodding, I explained, “Yeah, and follow him back to his mother.”
Bobbie shook her head. “It’s a good idea, Casey, but one that I can’t lawfully allow. No, we need to keep working the clues, like The X-Files connection.”
“What about it?” I asked, suddenly feeling out of the loop. I hated that feeling.
I looked at Jordy, and she said, “Robbie and I are going to Texas to investigate the arson piece of the murders.”
I turned to Jordy and shrugged. “And you hope to find what?”
“Long story short, she thinks there’s a connection between the FBI and the serial killer in Texas,” “Bobbie answered. “I don’t believe there is, but she’s going down there today to investigate it.”
“Bullshit,” I challenged. “If you didn’t think there was a possibility, you wouldn’t send her.”
Bobbie glared at me, but she knew I was right. “There’s always a possibility in these things, but I’m sending her down there to disprove her theory.”
“Excuse me,” Robbie said, holding up her hand. She was standing off from everyone else, and I hadn’t even noticed she was in the room until she spoke. “I have an idea.”
Bobbie held her hand out. “You have our attention, Robbie.”
“The family is after Kandyce’s daughter because she’s blood related, right?” We nodded in unison. “As much as I hate to admit it, Noel is my uncle by blood, and I might be able to convince him to talk to me. Maybe even welcome me into the family, if I’m a good enough actress.”
“No. Hell, no!” Jordy barked, walking over to her. “You can’t do that. I won’t let you.”
Robbie put her hands on her hips and glared at Jordy. “I’m not asking for your permission.”
Undaunted, Jordy continued, “Damn it, Robbie. You haven’t healed from your kidnapping.
